How does concrete become waterproof?

How does concrete become waterproof? How can you make waterproof concrete, cement and mortar yourself? How can existing concrete elements be sealed so that they become water-repellent? Which procedure is best?

We will answer these and some other questions in the following guide. In it, we discuss the composite material concrete in a waterproofed mixture and also as a building material that has already been processed and is to be made water-repellent retrospectively.

Making concrete waterproof or making a waterproof concrete mix – how do you make the building material resistant to water? Here are all the answers to your questions!

Is concrete waterproof?

Concrete is not 100 percent waterproof in the classic mix. The most popular concrete strength classes C 16/20 as well as C 20/25, however, retain some amounts of water in addition to the corresponding pressure. However, they can also absorb moisture to a certain depth if they are exposed to it permanently or under high pressure. The water resistance of the concrete also depends on how well it has already dried and hardened. Fresh, wet concrete is more susceptible to repeated irrigation than completely “finished” concrete, which can be worked on house, garden, bridge, office building and factory hall.

Waterproof cement – an alternative?

Cement is a binder used in the mixing and tempering of concrete. Sand, gravel, crushed stone or chippings are used as aggregates. Additional admixtures and additives are added to this basic mixture depending on the construction or DIY project. If you want to make the concrete waterproof, you can buy various admixtures and types of cement on the market to keep the moisture away from the finished building material as much as possible.

These additional ingredients for the composite material have one advantage: they ensure water resistance at every point of the component. This means that the concrete is still waterproofed even if the upper layers have flaked off.

However, the products sold under names such as Zementmix, Cement Mix, Water-free Concrete and the like have one disadvantage: they do not harden or seal the concrete. This means that the surface of the concrete component remains porous. It may not allow moisture or moisture to penetrate.

However, water and dirt can continue to accumulate in the superficial pores and microorganisms can multiply. Thus bacteria have the possibility to attack the component and moss, lichen, algae and other harmful growths are formed. This occurs all the more the more the unsealed and hardened surface is damaged.

Ergo: Using waterproof cement to mix concrete is one solution, but by no means the optimal one.

Concrete sealing for smooth, water-resistant surfaces

If you decide to use conventional concrete for your new building or if you have a concrete surface that already exists and needs to be made water-resistant, then silicification and sealing are the best means of choice. New and existing concrete floors as well as walls and roofs made of the composite building material have a microscopic roughness on the surface. In addition, mineral salts leave the core of the concrete.

Every day the concrete therefore wears off, causes dust and the pores of the surface provide space for dirt, moisture, microorganisms and other harmful influences.

Waterproofing concrete – How does is work?

Making concrete waterproof is therefore possible through various measures and techniques. So-called waterproof cement should not be used.

Although the additives used have a harder structure and a certain resistance to wetness and moisture, the surface of the concrete remains porous and susceptible to erosion, pests and green vegetation even when these substances are used.

It is therefore better to make the concrete waterproof with a professional sealant.

This applies not only to floors, but also to concrete walls, concrete roof tiles and other construction elements. Concrete tightness classes

The density of the concrete, as well as the compressive strength of the concrete, can be divided into classes. In general, a distinction is made between these four concrete density classes for the construction and use of buildings:

  • Class 1: Completely dry (living and working rooms, archives, server rooms, etc.)
  • Class 2: Dry or slightly moist (storage for moisture-sensitive goods, cellars, boiler rooms)
  • Class 3: Humid (buildings and rooms with less important or short-term use, e.g. underground car parks)
  • Class 4: Damp or wet (halls or structures used for simple shelter)

Weak points for waterproofness

The waterproofness of concrete can and should be achieved by sealing the surface. However, before and especially after construction measures, weak points may develop. For example, the boreholes used to attach shelves, machines or other wall elements, as well as the holes in the floor caused by the fixation of machines and components, serve as inlets for moisture and wetness.

Therefore, these holes, but also joints between concrete components and similar openings or gaps, must always be sealed watertight. Depending on the type of weak point and location (inside or outside), simple silicone can be used as a closure.

What does a horizontal barrier do?

A horizontal barrier is a seal applied to the wall, usually in the form of a liquid that hardens in the component. This internal water brake ensures that moisture cannot penetrate from a lower floor (cellar, underground car park) or from the floor into the wall and wet it through.

How to make Moulds for Concrete

If you want to cast concrete figures, concrete furniture or decorations from concrete, then you need appropriate casting moulds. These can be made from different materials, with sometimes more, sometimes less effort.

With other shapes and objects you can be similarly creative. So you have the possibility to produce a “concrete bottle” by pouring the building material into a glass bottle and carefully knocking it off after hardening. Silicone moulds have also become indispensable in the household and for the production of concrete decorations. For example, ice cube or praline moulds as well as cupcake and other silicone baking moulds are ideal for pouring concrete. The advantage of silicone casting moulds for concrete is that the building material can be flexibly removed from the moulds without these possibly breaking. There are many different silicone moulds for pouring dough, water, chocolate and other great kitchen utensils – just use them to make concrete figures, concrete moulds, paperweights, etc.

Of course, you can also make it easier and more individual by pouring the building material of cement, sand and water into cardboard moulds. Here, however, it is important to ensure that the cardboard is given a protective layer by means of foil, adhesive tape or other sealing materials. Depending on the size of the object to be cast and the amount of concrete required, you should also support the walls of the cardboard mould from the outside. The protection from the inside ensures that the cardboard form does not soak. The support from the outside ensures that the cardboard walls withstand the pressure of the concrete mass.

Some shapes may be too complex, too round or wavy, with too many angles or too simple for the use of cardboard. To produce filigree casting moulds for concrete and perhaps also to be able to add one or two 3D details, simply use Styrofoam or the finer-pored Styrodur. With a knife or hot wire (for smoother edges) cut out the desired cavity and fill it with concrete. If you only want to make the walls of the concrete mould from Styrofoam, Styrodur or the like, you can glue them to a wooden, cardboard or plastic base plate. Also note that the base plate should not soak.


In the third DIY tip (“Do It Yourself“) we suggest using gypsum to make a mould for concrete. Of course the effort is a bit higher, especially as you first have to form and harden the plaster, then fill in the concrete and let it harden. You can make various shapes out of plaster. If you have made a plaster mould of this or that object, of a body part or something else, use it for the building material made of sand, cement and water.


Silicone moulds are of course the best, also because they can be used again and again. A silicone mould can be used multiple times for casting concrete or plaster. PU Concrete – What is polyurethane concrete?

PU concrete is mostly used for floors and surfaces that are subject to particularly high stress and therefore have to withstand a lot. The floor covering, also known as polyurethane concrete or polyurethane eton, is not only particularly resistant to physical and mechanical influences and abrasion, but also to chemicals and high temperature fluctuations. The special hardness and resistance to shocks, friction, dirt, chemicals and temperature fluctuations results from the combination of mineral components (concrete) and synthetic elements (polyurethane). Farben plant. The colloquially abbreviated PU has the letter combination PUR as official abbreviation and combines plastics and synthetic resins. These are prepared from dialcohols (also diols) or polyols with polyisocyanates by polyaddition reaction. The group of substances, some of which together with concrete form the PU concrete, owes its name to the urethane group in its molecular structure, which consists of a nitrogen-hydrogen compound, carbon monoxide and oxygen (-NH-CO-O-).

Cleaning of concrete floor

If you cannot do anything against falling objects, heel strokes, there is a very simple way to prevent the deterioration of your waxed concrete floor by placing good quality pads with a strong adhesive under the set of feet of your furniture, tables, and chairs.

About once a year, if the protective coating shows signs of weakness, it can be stripped with a suitable product to remove the coating and apply a new one. Next, apply a new coating protection wax. This renovation of the waxed concrete floor is a delicate step that should be entrusted to a professional.
