FAQ about BECOSAN® Concrete Polishing System

BECOSAN® specialises in industrial-scale concrete polishing, offering a unique system that improves the durability and aesthetics of concrete floors. BECOSAN® polished concrete provides a durable, dust-free, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing surface, ideal for industrial environments.

Our site provides detailed information on industrial floor renovation, including our concrete polishing. Here are 10 questions we are often asked by our customers (mainly warehouse owners and managers):

The planimetry will remain the same as that of the original covering, so the BECOSAN® treatment does not affect the planimetry, either for good or for bad.

As a general rule, no, although in certain areas of the road it is possible to try to reduce the slope or correct the planimetry in addition to the treatment.

At BECOSAN® we do not alter the colour, and the final colour of the paving will be the colour of the paving itself. There are two ways of colouring or tinting concrete, superficially at the time of trowelling by applying a powdered colourant to the wearing course or by colouring the mass concrete. These two techniques are only possible with fresh concrete. For existing pavements, there are techniques for applying liquid and acid dyes, but the results are generally not very promising.

As the surface is micro-polished, the layer removed is of the order of a micrometre, which is practically negligible.

No, we do not only carry out repair work, these services are carried out in the preparatory phase and before the BECOSAN® treatment. In exceptional cases where repairs are of a considerable scale, we only carry out repair services.

We are currently receiving many enquiries about BECOSAN® finishes for homes, restaurants and small commercial premises, but unfortunately we are unable to provide a solution for such projects. BECOSAN® treatment is designed for industrial, logistics and large areas and we generally only work on areas larger than 1,000 metres.

Yes, the BECOSAN® finish is suitable for the food and agri-food industry.

For more information, see the BECOSAN® HACCP certificate.

The BECOSAN® polished finish has passed the DIN 51131 slipperiness standard, so we can assure you that it is slip-resistant and helps prevent falls and accidents.

However, we do not recommend our finish for industries that work in constantly wet conditions, such as the meat industry. It should be noted that factors such as dirt, dust, water and other surface residues can have a negative impact on slipperiness, so regular cleaning of the surface is recommended.

At BECOSAN®, we do not make concrete screeds. The treatment is limited to polishing the surface once the concrete has fully set 28 days after being poured.

BECOSAN® treatment is a wet process.

Once the treatment is complete, the surface can be used immediately, although it is recommended to wait at least 1 day when working with heavy machinery.

In general, we do not recommend the finish for outdoor use as it is difficult to keep clean and exposed to weather conditions such as rain, damp and snow, it may not be safe in terms of slipperiness.

Unlike epoxy or resin paints or coatings, the BECOSAN® finish does not need to be reapplied because the final finish of the floor covering is the covering itself, without any surface layer that could deteriorate.

BECOSAN® concrete polishing involves several key stages. Firstly, a diagnostic is carried out to assess the condition of the floor and determine the work required. Next, the surface is prepared, removing any existing coating or residue and repairing cracks, holes and levelling. The surface is then sanded using specialised machines and diamond discs, to eliminate micro-roughness and achieve a smooth appearance. A densification and hardening treatment is then applied to improve the floor’s durability and resistance. Finally, the floor is polished and sealed to protect it and achieve a finish with a lasting shine.

The difference between waxed and polished concrete lies in their appearance and finishing method. Polished concrete is obtained by a mechanical process of grinding and polishing, creating a smooth, shiny surface. It is often used in industrial or commercial environments for its durability. Waxed concrete, on the other hand, is a coating applied to an existing surface, offering a more decorative and varied finish. It is popular in residential spaces for its aesthetic appeal and its ability to imitate other materials.

Polished concrete offers a number of significant advantages. It is extremely durable and resistant, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. Its smooth surface makes it easy to clean and maintain. Polished concrete is also environmentally friendly, as it minimises the use of additional materials. What’s more, it improves aesthetics and creates dust-free, long-lasting spaces with a clean, shiny finish. Finally, it reflects light well, which can help to reduce lighting costs in buildings.

BECOSAN® uses techniques for repairing and filling cracks and levelling to ensure a uniform, high-quality concrete surface before polishing.

Yes, the BECOSAN® concrete polishing system is designed to be environmentally friendly, with dust elimination and minimal use of water-based chemicals.

The time required depends on the size of the surface and its initial condition, but BECOSAN® aims to offer quick and effective solutions, while eliminating the need to stop work.

BECOSAN® polished concrete is easy to maintain, requiring only regular cleaning with a pH-neutral product to maintain its appearance.

BECOSAN® polished concrete is designed to be extremely durable, resisting heavy traffic and wear. BECOSAN® offers a 10-year anti-dust guarantee.

Yes, the system can be applied to existing concrete floors, improving their quality and appearance.

The BECOSAN® system is a specialised method for treating concrete floors, mainly in industrial environments. The system is designed to improve the durability, appearance and functionality of concrete floors. It involves polishing the concrete and applying specific treatments to harden and protect the surface. This process makes the floors more resistant, easier to clean and improves their appearance.
