How to repair cracks in concrete floors in 4 steps

Of course, concrete is a wonderful material, hard, strong and long lasting but sooner or later the surface will begin to deteriorate. The surface will begin to wear and cracks can appear.

Here at  BECOSAN® we repair concrete cracks in 4 simple steps and afterwards the floor continues to deliver quality service well into the future.

Specialised in concrete floor repairs.

We carry out all types of work on concrete pavements. We work all over Europe and offer maintenance and repair solutions for industrial warehouses and large surfaces.

Step 1.  Evaluating the concrete damage

The first question we ask is how widespread is the concrete damage? Is it too bad for a simple repair?

Is there damage or extensive corrosion in the reinforcing steel? In which case replacement of the floor should be considered.

How wide are the cracks? We make measurements because different sizes of crack require different fillers.

Are the cracks still moving? As concrete heats it expands and as it cools it shrinks. Also, heavy trucks and machines moving on the floor can cause movement.

A crack that is still moving will require a very elastic solution.

Step 2. Preparing the crack for repair

We chase out the crack to create a backward-angled cut using an angle grinder. The loose material is then removed using a wire brush and a heavy duty vacuum cleaner.

Before we fill the crack we apply a layer of bonding adhesive to the entire repair area using a paint brush. The bonding adhesive helps to inhibit further deterioration of the damaged area and helps the filler material to bond to the surface.

Step 3.  Fill the crack.

Care must be taken in choosing a filler material.  Concrete itself is a poor choice because of its lack of flexibility.

Most repair materials today are polyureas, meaning that the basic material is very tough and flexible which will not crack when there are movements in the floor.

There are many products available but one feature is often forgotten, colour. At BECOSAN® we try and find a filler that matches the colour of your concrete otherwise your repairs could look like nasty scars.

Some fillers are the same consistency as water when poured meaning the filler will naturally fill the crack and find a natural level.

For small cracks a grouting can be applied for which you would use a hand trowel.

Larger cracks will be filled with a mortar that will be applied with a trowel.

Step 4.  Finishing.

Once all the cracks have been repaired we polish the floor and treat with the BECOSAN® system.

This process not only enhances the appearance of the floor, also the quality of the floor. It hardens and binds the surface, trapping the lime inside the structure. And the result is a polished concrete floor that prevents crumbling and delamination.
